IOCC Service Project

During Great and Holy Lent it is our Orthodox-Christian tradition to increase our alms-giving.
It is also customary during our annual Lenten Retreat to participate in a metropolis-wide outreach project.

This year our committee has decided to aid two vulnerable groups of people who are in desperate need of our help.

(read on for details)

As many of you know, the Syrian Civil War continues to destroy people's lives-12 million people have been displaced since the war's inception five years ago, 4 million of which are innocent children.  This humanitarian crisis is without a modern-day parallel.  Many of the those displaced have entered Europe through the Aegean islands and the Greek islanders have been on the front-lines of receiving  and offering them hospitality, while in a dire financial crisis of their own.

On the day of the retreat we are planning to assemble 100 Health Kits for IOCC/ Syria.
Each kit will have one hand towel, one washcloth, one comb, one metal file or nail clipper, one bath-size bar of soap, one tooth brush and six Band-Aids. We are currently in the process of ordering and purchasing 1300 items for the kits.
We will also be purchasing shipping supplies and paying to ship the 100 Health Kits.
These kits although basic in our eyes, tell refugees that someone cares for them and that they are not forgotten.

We also desire to help the most vulnerable people of Greece--the elderly, orphans and the disabled.
IOCC'S GIVE FOR GREECE CAMPAIGN is working with Apostoli, the humanitarian arm of the Church of Greece, to provide emergency winter aid, food and medicine.
IOCC has received a generous grant from the Jaharis Family Foundation, Inc. and will match donations to IOCC up to $1,000,000.00.
Whatever we donate to IOCC for Greece will be doubled by this magnanimous grant.

Please consider donating generously to IOCC when you register your family for the Lenten Retreat.
None of us lives in fear of having to flee our home in a moment's notice or wonder where our children will rest their heads or where their next paltry meal will come from.
If 40 families donate $50.00 we will send $2,000.00 in cash and health kits to IOCC. (This does not include the impact of the Jaharis matching grant).
In thanksgiving for your God-given bounty,  please consider making a generous donation to IOCC.
Thank you.
